What Is A Mantra - Unlocking The Power Of Sacred Sound

Most of you must be well-acquainted with mantras. If you are a follower of Hinduism or Buddhism, then they have been a part of your life, since childhood. So, what are mantras and why do they get so much importance? Most mantras are chanted during rituals and ceremonies, as they are believed to sync with the frequencies of deities and celestial objects. You will also find people chanting mantras, for stress relief and healing. And we are going to unearth that power today.

What Is A Mantra?

A mantra in plain language, is a sound, word, or a phrase. Some mantras have multiple sentences and they are believed to align with the universe and impact human brains. These tools are used for the mind, and can be traced back to the Sanskrit language. When you recite mantras, you can also connect with the higher energies. Additionally, they raise your consciousness as well. You can choose to chant them loudly or recite them in your mind. The same results can be derived.

Types Of Mantras

You will come across different types of mantras, when you start exploring the realm. They are as follows:

  • Beej mantra or seed mantra
  • Saguna mantra
  • Nirguna mantra

So, let us find out more about them here.

Beej Mantras

These are single syllable sounds, which have a huge amount of vibrational energy in them. You can often use them alone, as their impact is stronger that way. But you can also use them with others. For the unversed, there are seven chakras aligned across the central nadi, which is called Sushumna nadi in our astral body. Nadis are energy channels, which you cannot see or view in any scientific imaging. When these nadis are blocked, the Life energy or ‘Prana’ is stalled. The two beej mantras which you should know about are ‘Om’ and ‘Lam’.

Saguna Mantras

These are mantras with a form. These are mostly used for specific deities. Thereafter, intense personalization follows. When the devotee chants the mantras in front of any deity, then the connection happens. However, one needs to do a lot of ‘sadhana’, to gain this connection with the divine. ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ is the mantra for Lord Shiva. His devotees can be seen chanting this mantra numerous times to gain his blessings.

Nirguna Mantras

These are formless in nature. These come from the ancient Vedas. These are in sync with yogic philosophies and not any particular deity. You have to be much focussed to make an impact with them. And they are abstract in nature, so learning them and using them can be challenging for beginners. One example which you should know of is, ‘Aham Brahmasmi’.

Science Behind The Mantras

As mantras have been derived from Sanskrit language originally, they have to be recited with that inherent sound. You have to recite the mantras in the same manner, as mentioned in the Vedas, otherwise they will make no sense and no impact.

The sound is very important here, in the recitation of mantras. It really does not matter, if you know the meaning or not. You can say that, mantra is an arrangement of sounds. But, like musical notes, they may not be very pleasing aesthetically. Mantras have the power to set the right sort of ambience. These mantras or sacred sounds have a lot of benefits. Let us delve into them.

How Do Mantras Bring Peace And Harmony?

For all human beings, the experiences of the past are stored in the subconscious and the unconscious. When you chant mantras, they bring you to the present. Slowly, your feelings also get released. The sounds and vibrations which are associated with mantras, have the power to enter your conscious mind, helping remove blocked energies. When these blocks are released, the energy flows more seamlessly. Thus, you become relaxed.

Each word or syllable in a mantra carries a meaning and a vibration. These vibrations are of spiritual nature. The vibrational frequency and the meaning together sync with spiritual energy. When you pronounce them right, the mantra’s energy connects to your soul’s energy.

You can fully utilize the power of such sacred sounds, by chanting mantras, either aloud, in your mind, or in whispers. It is best to focus on the heart chakra or the ajna chakra, when reciting mantras. You can also control a wandering mind, during chanting, by focusing on the perineum, in the root chakra. Secondly, practicing mantra chanting in the early hours help focus. You can do it at sunset as well.

Finally…

You can derive a lot of benefits physically, mentally, and emotionally, by chanting mantras. You get purified inside out, your vibrations increase, and you attract a lot of prosperity. You can also connect with your divine deity through mantras. Intent must be clear, along with proper pronunciation to get the complete benefits. Join Ora Healing to learn this magical practice.
